A 1996 law in Massachusetts allows the continuation of group health insurance coverage for employees of small businesses not covered by federal COBRA. Under the state’s Mini-COBRA law, eligible individuals who lose coverage due to termination or a reduction in hours may continue their group plan for a limited time.
- Applies to employees of companies with fewer than 20 employees.
- Covers up to 12 months of continued group health coverage.
- Employees must elect coverage within 60 days of the qualifying event.
- The full premium, up to 102% of the group rate, must be paid by the individual.
- Continued coverage must include the same benefits as the original group plan.
